3 Purposes of Church (Check YOUR Understanding)

The New Testament Church
READ Matthew 16:13-18
Today the word “church” is often used differently than the way it’s defined in Scripture.
We tend to think of a building with a steeple, a morning or evening service, or a potluck get-together.
But, God is very specific about this term.
In the Bible, Colossians 1:18, “church” means a body of believers under the authority of their leader, Jesus Christ.
God’s Word also clarifies the three purposes of the church.

The three purposes are worship of the Lord, ministry to believers, and outreach to an unbelieving world.

***Our primary focus should be to exalt the living God.
By acknowledging who He is and glorifying His name, we show our Father that we love Him.

Psalm 100:2-4 encourages us to “come before the Lord with joyful singing” and to “enter His gates with thanksgiving and . . . praise.”

We must be grounded in truth if we’re to be spiritually fruitful.
* So a second goal is to teach people and turn them to godly action.
*A third aim is to reach unbelievers with the good news that through God’s Son, they can be forgiven of sin.
They’ll also gain eternal life.
The Lord Himself instructed us to “make disciples of all the nations.
We should baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”.

Knowing God

Knowing God
READ Psalm 81:10-16
Most people want to be understood.
We may have many acquaintances, but we need to feel “known” by those we love most.
This also applies to how God views our relationship with Him.
He knows our every thought.
God can count the number of hairs on our head.
We also should be learning His ways.
How our Father thinks.
What motivates Him.
What His plan and purpose are.
Although we desire to know the Lord’s mind, He makes it quite clear that this is impossible.
In Isaiah 55:9, He tells us, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
This is why God gives us His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit can teach us and reveal what we otherwise couldn’t understand.
Growing in this spiritual understanding is necessary to have a deep personal relationship with God.
We must know His ways before we can walk in them.
Our obedience not only glorifies our heavenly Father; it’s also best for us.
Following Jesus doesn’t eliminate pain.
t also doesn’t ensure everything will happen as we would choose.
But we have assurance the Lord loves us and has a plan for our lives.
He gives us strength and stability to follow Him, no matter where His path may lead us.
He’s truly a loving Father to give such goodness and kindness to His children.

You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
John 16:24 (New Living Translation)

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.
James 5:16 (New Living Translation)

Confess and repent, pray then as a righteous person, Ask, using Jesus' name. Give thanks as if your prayers had already been answered, for we have already been told our prayer as a righteous person has great power, with wonderful results, and will have abundant joy! Praise be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Amen

Prayer Request

"Please be in prayer for a young couple who are facing the loss of their 3 year old daughter. The mother has bipolar disorder; social services has removed the child from the home and is moving to terminate parental rights and place the child for adoption. The parents are devastated. They are wonderful parents who have struggled with an extremely difficult illness. The mother is stable and compliant; the child is not and never has been in any danger. She loves her parents and the constant movement to different foster care placements is beginning to cause negative behavioral changes. There is no rational reason for removing the child from the family home at this point. Please pray that God's wisdom and justice will prevail.

"Lord, this is the type of request that breaks my heart and grieves my soul. I am reminded of Your own words, "Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing." In faith and obedience, we share this burden that is weighing so heavily upon this young family. Hide this precious child in Your grace and let her feel Your love all around her. Send the angels of heaven to protect her wherever she may be. Lord, grant Your divine compassion and wisdom to those who are making decisions on this child's behalf. May this family experience the fullness of Your peace and the reassurance that You are working in this situation to accomplish Your divine purpose. We ask these things in Your precious and holy name. Amen.

Good Mid-Morning!!

It's Thursday, June 26, 2008
almost 10:30

This is the day the Lord had made, Let us rejoice and be glad!

I have to claim this today, as my spirit is low. I awoke at 8 a.m.. The house is quiet but for the gentle snores and soft breathing of others in sleep. I must be quiet and have my time here sipping coffee out of the angel mug Carolyn bought for me and gave an identical one to Jill while we were in Texas with her 2 weeks ago. Jill gave me a mug and Carolyn with her name on it so we could all have coffee together in the mornings, but I believe I must have left it at her home. I drank coffee out of it everyday while I was there with her and I bet it's in her drainboard. That has to mean I will be back there soon to have coffee with her in person. They are my sisters. I love them dearly and I pray for each of them and thier daily needs.

My day must start now. My foremost thoughts are with my cousin Raney and his wife, Jean. It's another day of cancer fighting for them and I pray God will give them strength. Also, my daughter Naomi, who is also fighting cancer and her husband Allen and their children; Bradley and Ashley. God never puts more on us than we can bare, but there is a crying out to Him, Father Almighty, through His son Jesus Christ, that these are burdens when we are at our weakest, and He is the one who makes us strong. We ask for the Holy Spirit to keep us alight with the fire and desire to do God's will, In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Possibilities

Topic: Temporal and Spiritual Revelation

"Revelation is not enjoyed by the members of the Church, only. The Constitution of the United States was revealed from God; and I cannot help but think if the people of the world would study the source of great discoveries made for the betterment of the children of men, in the sciences and in the arts, they would at once admit there was some power greater than man that had brought them about. The wireless telegraphy is a marvel and a wonder; as well as the telephone, by which the human voice is now carried from ocean to ocean. These inventions did not come about through man's wisdom alone. The development of electricity and the transmission of thousands of horsepower over a small copper wire, for hundreds of miles away from where the power is generated, have been made possible through inspiration from our Heavenly Father. We need not be told, my brethren and sisters, that the men who have made these great discoveries did not receive inspiration from a greater source than their own brain. If a man places himself in a position to receive revelation or inspiration from God, seeks it diligently and honestly, it is often granted him, particularly if his heart and soul are in attune with God's purposes." - Reed Smoot, "Conference Report," April 1915, Second Day—Morning Session, p.90

Prayer, Promise, & Psalms & Saint Patrick

Prayer~~~
As I arise today, may the strength of God pilot me, the power of God uphold me, the wisdom of God guide me. May the eye of God look before me, the ear of God hear me, the word of God speak for me. May the handof God protect me, the way of God lie before me, the shield of Goddefend me, the host of God save me. May Christ shield me today...Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me. Amen.

~Saint Patrick of Ireland ~

Feastday: March 17Patron Irelandb. 387 d.461
Saint Patrick
St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.
Along with St. Nicholas and St. Valentine, the secular world shares our love of these saints. This is also a day when everyone's Irish.
There are many legends and stories of St. Patrick, but this is his story.
Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britian in charge of the colonies.
As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.
During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote
"The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."
Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britian, where he reunited with his family.
He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more."
He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years.
Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly to Patrick.
Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message.
Patrick by now had many disciples, among them Beningnus, Auxilius, Iserninus, and Fiaac, (all later canonized as well).
Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.
He died at Saul, where he had built the first church. Why a shamrock?
Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time. In His Footsteps:
Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission.

Promise of Belief and Trust~~~

I recall a story about a tightrope walker who stretched a two-inch cable across the gorge of Niagara Falls. He asked the crowd that gathered if they believed he could carry a man across the gorge. The crowd had seen him successfully make the trip across the cable, so they cheered that they believed he could carry someone else across. Then the tightrope walker asked who was willing to climb on his shoulders for the trip across the gorge. The crowd fell silent. They believed HE could do it, but no one was able to trust him with their own life. Finally, the performer's manager stepped forward to volunteer. He had known the performer for many years and had complete confidence in him. As they prepared for the dangerous feat, the performer gave the following instructions to his passenger: "You must not trust your feelings, but mine. If you trust your feelings, we both will fall. You must become part of me.

"If we are to safely traverse this life's journey, we must become a part of Christ. Ideally, He should be so much a part of us and we should be so much a part of Him that we cannot distinguish where one stops and the other begins. We will instinctively trust Him to direct every movement and every decision we make.

Psalm~~~
In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all —Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied; For every sin on Him was laid —Here in the death of Christ I live. No guilt in life, no fear in death —This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home —Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

Prayer Warriors( davenll@shands.ufl.edu)

There are a number of women in our prayer group that can personally relate....me too. As a single mother struggling to make a new life for myself and my three children, God's spirit led me to Isaiah 54.
I prayed those words whenever I doubted that "someone" would take care of me.....and that Someone has provided exceedingly abundantly beyond all I could have hoped or imagined. He is able and His grace is greater than our circumstances. We are sustained by prayer....thank you for yours. xo>>>

7/10/2008 2:12 AM >>>Dear Linda, I was once in that young woman's shoes. I took my children and had to go "underground". God protected me and my children. He opened every door that I needed and provided for us. I never felt so safe and loved than when the Lord was my refuge. Praise God for his tender mercies and loving capable arms. I had, no home, no car, the brakes went out of my "winter-beater"(that's what know up north as an old broken down car you don't mind driving in the winter), and only a part-time job. Please let her know that we will be praying for her with an understanding heart. Love, Cate

One of our members has requested prayer for a friend who is suffering from depression.

Father, we are so thankful for the privilege of prayer and for the comfort that is ours when we surrender our problems to You. In faith and obedience, we lift this request before You, asking that You would intervene in the way You know is best. We stand in agreement that You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and of power and of sound mind. Speak peace to this troubled mind and restore hope, in Jesus' name. Amen.

A 2002 Ford Expedition parked in a homeowner’s carport is suspected as the cause of a fire in Madison County, Ohio that killed a woman and her two children.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that the origin of the fire has been narrowed to a 10-foot space in the carport although investigators have not yet determined the cause.
Peter Romans, who survived the fire that killed his wife and children, told investigators that the fire started in his parked Ford SUV, according to the news paper.
The fire killed Billi Romans, 51; Ami Romans, 16; and Caleb Romans, 12. Their bodies were found near the back door of their house,
Peter Romans, 47, escaped with minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The 2001 Ford Expedition suspected of igniting the fatal blaze was included in the Ford Motor Company recall of 9.6 million vehicles equipped with a faulty cruise-control switch. the switch can “lead to a vehicle fire at any time,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Ford recall began in 2005. It has dragged on because of the sheer size of the recall effort, a shortage of parts and a lack of urgency by regulators.
Several dwelling fires have been attributed to the faulty cruise-control switch which can overheat and erupt into flames.
After years of fires involving Ford vehicles, NHTSA on February 28 warned Ford, Lincoln and Mercury owners of fire hazards involving the faulty cruise control switches in recalled Ford vehicles that have not been repaired.
ConsumerAffairs.com has been reporting on the problem for years, chronicling fires in vehicles parked outside homes, in garages and even at fire stations.
In a strongly worded and highly unusual statement, NHTSA urged owners of the recalled vehicles to go to a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer as soon as possible and have the potentially dangerous cruise control system disconnected.
The recalled vehicles are: 1. 1993 – 2004 F1502. 1993 – 1999 F250 (gasoline engine)3. 1993 – 1996 Bronco4. 1994 – 1996 Econoline5. 1997 – 2002 Ford Expedition6. 1998 – 2002 Lincoln Navigator7. 1998 – 2002 Ford Ranger8. 1992 – 1998 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car9. 1993 – 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII10. 1993 – 1995 Ford Taurus SHO with automatic transmission11. 1994 – Mercury Capri12. 1998 – 2001 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer13. 2001 – 2002 Ford Explorer Sport and Explorer Sport Trac14. 1992 – 1993 and 1997 – 2003 Ford E-150-350 gasoline or natural gas vehicles15. 2002 – E-550 gasoline engine vehicles16. 1996 – 2003 E-450 gasoline or natural gas vehicles17. 1994 – 2002 F-250 through F-550 super Duty trucks (gasoline engine)18. 2000 – 2002 Ford Excursion (gasoline engine)19. 2003 – F250 – F550 Super Duty, Ford Excursion20. 1995 – 2002 Ford F53 Motor home chassis21. 2002 – 2003 Lincoln Blackwood
"Failure to have the switch disconnected could lead to a vehicle fire at any time, whether or not the key is in the ignition, and whether or not owners use the cruise control system," NHTSA warned in the consumer advisory.
Ford is once again preparing to notify the owners of the affected vehicles to have the switch disconnected until it can be repaired, according to NHTSA.
Fatal fires allegedly caused by the defective switch have led to wrongful death lawsuits against Ford by several vehicle owners.
5 million time bombs
NHTSA reported that approximately five million vehicles have been repaired so far, leaving almost five million passenger cars and light trucks with the faulty switches intact, and in danger of catching fire at any time without warning.
The firestorm of Ford trucks erupting into flames has devastated Ford truck owners across the country.
The Ford inferno hit a homeowner in Chisago City, Minnesota in January when her 2000 Ford Expedition “started on fire parked in our attached garage. We have now lost everything we owned,” wrote the Ford Expedition owner. “The home we built not even 2 years ago burned to the ground,” she said.
Another Ford truck went up in flames in Westminster, California on January 22. This homeowner is fortunate. He lost only his Ford truck and not his house as well.
A Ford spokesman told ConsumerAffairs.Com in February that the automaker was doing all it can to complete the fire hazard recall.
“This was a large recall, and we're working with the supplier to meet the volume challenge as soon as possible,” the Ford executive told ConsumerAffair.Com.
Ford concedes a parts shortage is delaying repairs of the fire prone cruise control system in the recalled vehicles until later in 2008.
As a short-term solution, Ford offers to disconnect the cruise control system in recalled vehicles until parts are available to complete the repair.
Some Ford dealers now require customers who decline to disconnect the cruise control system to sign a waiver of liability.
With just more than half of the fire-prone Fords repaired, the automaker insisted the company is responding adequately in an effort to notify Ford customers to return their vehicles to a Ford dealership for repair of the fire hazard.
“We have sent multiple mailings to customers, based on current vehicle registrations, asking them to bring in vehicles. We have one of the highest return rates in the industry, based on update registration info, and sending multiple mailings,” a Ford spokesman told ConsumerAffairs.Com.
Too late
But the warnings and recall notices have come too late for many Ford owners.
• A Vidor, Texas man saw his mother's truck burning out of control less than a week after federal safety regulators issued the consumer advisory.
“I heard a loud BOOM and then horns going off. I thought it was a wreck. When I looked outside a large gulf of flames was burning dangerously close to the house and truck,” he said. “We kept the flames from hitting the house until fire department got there.”
The outrageous -- but common -- story of Ford vehicles catching fire was reported over and again throughout the country in February as NHTSA talked and worried in internal agency meetings about whether to issue the consumer advisory.
• On February 27 in Granite City, Illinois, the day before the NHTSA warning, a 2001 Ford F150 burned.
“I was awakened by 2 small booms about a minute apart. I got up to check things out to find my 2001 F150 in the driveway fully engulfed in flames as well as my boat parked about 15 feet away beginning to burn,” the Illinois truck owner reported. “The truck, boat, contents, asphalt driveway are total losses,” he said.
• A day later in Monticello, Florida a Ford F150 burned in a shopping center parking lot while the owner was inside a store.
• In early February in Fairview, New Mexico a 1997 Ford F150 burst into flames. “We heard a loud boom which caused the dogs to start barking,” the truck owner said. When the Monticello fire department arrived 30 minutes later the truck was still burning.
• An Orange Park, Florida Ford owner reported February 9 that his 1999 Lincoln Navigator caught fire and was destroyed.
• On February 9 a 1999 Ford Explorer caught fire in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
“I had just parked at a Burger King for lunch. The truck caught fire minutes after I enter the restaurant,” the owner said. “The truck was fully engulfed when firefighters finally put out the fire. I am grateful no one was in the vehicle at the time but I am out the only truck I owned.”
The Rhode Island Explorer owner told ConsumerAffairs.Com that he was not aware of the recall issued in issued on August 2007 and said he was never notified of the important recall even though he had owned the vehicle for many years.
• On February 4, a Ford F150 Lariat caught fire in Virginia Beach, Virginia, even though the cruise control switch was previously repaired under the terms of the August recall.
• In Alta Loma, California a ConsumerAffairs.Com reader found his Ford truck on fire while eating lunch at home. “Surprisingly every Ford rep was extremely rude and acted as though it's my problem not theirs,” this Ford truck owner reported.
• On January 22, a Ford Expedition XLT caught fire in Westminster California.
”After driving the vehicle for approximately 20 minutes it was parked in the driveway,” the owner said. “Approximately 1 hour later the engine compartment was on fire and became engulfed within minutes. Fortunately the vehicle was not in the garage.”
Ford truck and SUV owners wanting more information about the fire danger in their vehicle or the recall may contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673 or NHTSA 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

Stand for Something or You'll Fall for Anything

QUOTE OF THE DAY:President Gordon B. Hinckley

"I am an optimist! What a wonderful time it is to be alive, here at the turn of a milestone century! With that frame of reference, my plea is that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life, we 'accentuate the positive.' I am asking that we look a little deeper for the good, that we still our voices of insult and sarcasm, that we more generously compliment and endorse virtue and effort" (Standing For Something, p. 101).

Psalms

"The Lord will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands. The Lord said, 'I will rescue [her] and protect [her]. [She] will call upon me and I will answer [her]; I will be with [her] in times of trouble and will deliver [her].' "
Psalm 91

Our cousin Raney

Raney is undergoing chemotherapy and has been hospitalized with complications (one of his arms was swollen twice its normal size). The doctor suspects it is a blood clot. He has lost a lot of weight and with the complications, the doctor may stop the chemotherapy. Lord, we praise You for Your great mercy. You are our refuge in times of great distress and our hope in every situation. We stand together in faith as we lift Raney and his family before you today. May they hear Your whisper of love and reassurance, and may they rest in peace as only You can give. Bless them and keep them, in Your precious name. Amen >>> Linda Davenport 5/30/2008 3:34 PM >>>Please continue to pray for Raney who is being treated for cancer of the liver and pancreas. "I was relieved to hear the tumors are growing smaller. There was no change in the pancreas, but there also was no sign of it spreading. I claim it's due to everyone's prayers. I praise and thank God for every measure of blessing He bestows. My prayers are for the prayers warriors. We have no need to worry, for we can change nothing. They will give him a 10 day rest, then start with chemo again. Thank you so much for your prayers."O God, our help in ages past, You are the one true source of Hope, our Refuge, our Deliverer. Only in You will our souls find rest, for "the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders." Grant us faith and courage to entrust all things to You. We unite our hearts in prayer for this request, seeking Your blessed provision and healing, according to Your divine purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen."When we have nothing left but God, we become aware that God is enough." ~ Agnes Royden 1876 ~>>>Linda Davenport 5/5/2008 3:42 PM>>>One of our members has sent the following request. Please add Raney to your prayer lists:...............Dear Linda, Please ask the prayer warriors to pray for my cousin Raney (liver and pancreatic cancer). We know Jesus came to us as a healer. Our belief in Him is steadfast and we yearn to touch the hem of His garment and know He will heal us. Please ask for strength for endurance, rest from the pain, and peace in our souls that Christ is our Lord & Redeemer. Love, CatePhilippians 1:21~24 "For to me, living means opportunities for Christ and dying---well, that's better yet! But if living will give me more opportunities to win people to Christ, then I really don't know which is better, to live or die! Sometimes I want to live and at other times I don't, for I long to go and be with Christ. How much happier for ME than being here! But the fact is that I can be of more help to YOU by staying."These words by St. Paul help me realize there is a perfect life waiting, but our work here is in accordance with God's will. Perhaps my cousin's sufferings here will give him a witness and testimony for other cancer patients. Where there is life there is hope! Our Lord is a healer!! Dear Heavenly Father, as Raney's family gather and support a loved one so dear, hearts are broken by the suffering and pain he endures to get well, to live life with his dear wife, Jean. We lift them up to you Father, to bless and bestow your tender mercies. We are your children Lord. Let us offer our sufferings and pain along with your Son Jesus' suffering and pain for us. We know to continue to thank You and praise You in our circumstances, good and bad, this is your will in Christ Jesus concerning us. To pray without ceasing. We know, Father, that you are faithful. You send us the Comforter to live within our heart, soul and mind. We praise and thank you for Raney, the loving family you have provided him. We ask, that you give wisdom to hi caretakers and surround them with faith, hope and love. In Jesus name we ask and pray. Amen
